As a shorty, I was always told that if I wasn't going to be part of the greatest, I'd have to be the greatest myself. And that's sort of what we're going for. If anyone with $100 and a website can become a gatekeeper, why can't we?

But also, a big part of the RIOUGA ethos is that you can be your own gatekeeper. So why not enter a pun-based film festival judged exclusively by Beccas and act like it's Turbo Mega Cannes?

Are you also working on a documentary?

The Try Becca Film Festival is and will be a completely legitimate film festival. It is also part of a larger project investigating film festivals and by extension FilmFreeway. We've noticed an ever growing number of smaller festivals that seem designed entirely to bilk independent artists of their limited submission budget. We've also noticed larger festivals simultaneously become a closed circle of creators while also hitting up people they've rejected for donations or to help fund their cinematic passion projects. To be clear, there are hundreds of festivals that are both legitimate and cool and if we had more talent we'd submit to them, but those earlier facts raised some questions.

This is to say that we want to create a fun and inclusive low cost film festival where you can show up in formal attire and make fun of prestigious events. But it's also part of an examination into what is going on with festivals at large. We will be showing the inner workings of this festival and the effort that goes into what is a borderline joke, and also asking "hey, if we wanted to we could do none of this work and this is the money we'd take home, so imagine what would happen if we had ten or twenty identical festivals and third party sites did nothing about it."

We might also be making a bad film and entering it everywhere to accumulate fake awards, but shush.
